Olives, Olympians, and Open Waters: Wild Swimming Adventures in the Gard

Olives, Olympians, and Open Waters: Wild Swimming Adventures in The Gard

If the fashionable fish on social media are anything to go by, wild swimming seems to be making quite the splash across Europe. The once-niche activity has been riding a wave of popularity, with more people than ever trading chlorinated pools for a more natural experience.

It's not just us mere mortals embracing this trend. Even the Olympics have gotten in on the act. As of August 2024, the Seine in Paris - yes, that Seine, the city-crossing river you thought was only good for scenic boat rides and romantic film sequences - has been cleaned up and deemed fit for the Olympics 2024 marathon swimming and triathlon events.

The Seine in Paris has been cleaned up for Olympics 2024! 🏅

Before you start picturing me as some sort of aquatic superhero, let me assure you that my idea of wild swimming is less 'Olympic triathlete' or 'ice-breaking Wim Hof disciple' and more 'enthusiastic doggy-paddler who occasionally shrieks at a passing minnow'. While some hardy souls are busy shivering their way to enlightenment, and others are racing for gold medals, I prefer my wild swimming with a side of sunshine and a chaser of 'feeling in my extremities', thank you very much.

Here in the sun-drenched Gard - located in the southern reaches of France - we take a somewhat more civilised approach to communing with nature. Our crystal-clear rivers offer a refreshing dip that's more 'gentle wake-up call' than 'cardiac arrest in progress' or 'sprint for Olympic glory'.

Unlike any other - The tranquil and active areas of The Cascades Sautadet

So, whether you're a seasoned water baby, a nervous landlubber, or an aspiring Olympian, the rivers of The Gard are calling. Just remember: safety first, wild swimming second, and Instagram posts a distant third (unless you're going for influencer gold, of course).

And for you men and boys, these natural swimming spots are Speedo-optional!

Of course, if your wild swimming adventures ever lead you from our free-spirited rivers to the more controlled setting of French public pools, be prepared for a cultural splash. While anything goes in our natural water playgrounds, French pools have a, shall we say, snugger approach to swim attire. Yes, we’re talking infamous 'budgie smugglers' – known less colourfully as Speedos to the uninitiated.

In French public pools, these tight-fitting trunks aren't just for professional swimmers or those blessed with the physique of a Greek god. Oh no, they're often obligatory for men of all ages and body types. It's a level of sartorial regulation that's both amusing and, at times, mildly terrifying.

But fear not! Here in these wild waters, you're free to sport whatever swimwear floats your boat, from board shorts to bikinis. Our rivers don't discriminate! Just remember: what happens in the Gardon, stays in the Gardon!

Pont des Abarinnes at Mialet

I once tried to capture the essence of wild swimming from a regular swimming spot of mine at Mialet. Allow me to share a little snippet from my journal:

Speaking of picnics, if you'll excuse me, I have a date with mine. Wild swimming does wonders for the appetite! 🫒 🍒
